Reel To Reel Maintenance (Unstable Tape Speed)

(Ask Vince)

Mar 18th, 2015

Q) I just purchased a Pioneer rt-1050 reel to reel tape deck. I've found that the speed is very unstable. Is this a common problem with this unit and can it be caused by non-manufacturer power chord which this one came with?

A) No. These are great machines but obviously they are 35 years old now. The problem is the unit is in need of maintenance. (possibly new drive belt, oil of motor and mechanism, the speed switch itself can arc out and become intermittent as well as all switches need a proper cleaning and touch up calibration. Occasional one of brake bands get out of line and rubs on the internal reel hub. However it is possible that because old tape is run on the machine, that dropped tape oxide is clogging the tape paths and dragging the tape with excessive friction, sometimes causing a “squealing” effect as the tape tries to pass over the friction. You can clean all tape paths with 95% isopropyl alcohol and medical cotton swabs. (not q-tips they just fall apart). This might improve the operation, but again a 35 year old machine will typically need more thorough maintenance. We can service here and typical repair cost is $140 to $240 includes top to bottom clean, calibrate, small parts, and return shipping. Great machine, I recommend them.
