Update and Repair of Bozak and Urie DJ mixers

(Repair)

Jun 27th, 2015

First of all, a few different versions of this unit exist. The original Bozak is a discreet transistor circuit design, as opposed to Urie being an op amp based design (although I believe I have seen some Uries as transistor designs, too). Nevertheless, DJs' opinions of its sound qualities must be viewed with a little reservation, as these variations on design sound remarkably different. One of the contributing factors is the quality and aging of capacitors used in this older design, which can radically alter the bass response and clarity of audio. This becomes the crucial requirement to update, and return the audio quality to at least original (or better) spec. There are about 20 capacitors typically in need of replacement - mostly interstage coupling capacitors and gain set capacitors. Better quality capacitors will improve the sense of impact and dynamic range in this very basic design. The old capacitors are cheap electrolytic European-made parts, and suffer from the internal electrolytic fluid drying out and causing fuzzy or intermittent sound. Other problems that are commonly encountered are the board connectors and the plug-in boards developing intermittent oxidized connections, which need cleaning and tightening. The controls also get noisy with age, and are difficult to clean. It's usually a "sealed" tight assembly which we pry up on one of the edges on the back and squirt cleaner in. These are almost always Allen Bradley controls, and they do clean up well. Although the units vary a little, most had RFI suppression capacitors at the board ground chassis, but we add more RFI suppression onto all channels.
