Glass ferrite vs Permalloy playback heads

(Ask Vince)

Dec 8th, 2008

I have to tell people this bad news all the time—the heads are glass ferrite and are impossible to find or replace (one reason why I seldom actually resell these Akai GX machines as working). I should spend time to find an appropriate retrofit, but the equalization bias is specific to these heads. So it is a difficult situation. Your only option is to send the heads to someone, maybe JRF, who can do a very special polishing treatment to the surface, but it can be expensive. To be honest, ultimately the TEAC, Pioneers, Technics, and Revox machines will be the survivors for cost effective operation. These machines use permalloy heads, which have better frequency and dynamic range compared to the glass ferrite heads.
