Marantz CD Burners

(Ask Vince)

Q) I'm looking for a Marantz CDR 600 or a Phillips CDR 101. Do you have one or know where I might find one of these old units??

A) In all honesty I would have to strongly advise against looking for one of these machines. They were notorious for high failure rate, and parts are difficult to find. Seldom is a cost effective service possible. Philips owns Marantz and sets the policy. The only reason why a Marantz is listed here is because we can make sure the laser specs OK, and some people just want the same item for replacement, regardless of my informed opinion. Unfortunately Philips supplied CDR transport to many other companies, including Harmon Kardon, and a few Teacs (which rumor has it Teac filed a lawsuit against Philips).

Although older Philips was quite good, their recent history proves that only very specific selection of certain equipment by knowledgeable techs is the only reliable way to find worthwhile Marantz product. This company hides behind it's incompetence to clearly have model# and chassis# correct to order parts. Worse yet, they charge ridiculous money for simple parts (ie $8 for a fuse?!?!)

If you want a superior CDR burner, at this point it is the HHB Burn It series. (Also historically the same item marketed by Fostex and originated as the high quality, high longevity Pioneer based unit, who still supplies parts, service, etc. cost effectively). It will do 2000+ discs before laser replacement.

To be honest I should remove the listing (we get these in on a regular basis though). The longevity on these is 200 to 400 made discs. HHB has a far better product (Model 830) $540 as new, runs 2000 discs or more. Broken CDR-500 sell for $50, working $300 - $400.

For more info, or details on price and how to order give a call (617)926-8020.

Thanks -Vince.
