We have had many customers write in asking about original version XA AR turntables. We rarely have any complete ARs, because we usually break them for parts - they are worth more in pieces than as complete units. Be aware this design has a number of faults that prevents these from being true audiophile turntables. The original arm cannot track a good quality cartridge (too much friction) and the arm is also too heavy, so that only a basic 2. 5 to 3 gram tracking force low compliance design stylus can be effectively used. A modified AR with a new arm, dampened chassis and other mods can be nicer than some more expensive units, but there are plenty of better vintage Japanese turntables that can be had for around $200, that will simply work better with modern quality cartridges. I mainly deal with well-done technology that stays calibrated and is reliable and easy to fix, and most of my customers want a turntable that has auto-return, pitch controls, hinged dust covers, etc. AR were amazing for their brilliant suspension design, but the archaic arm design and motor rumble noise holds these units back unless they've been modified. I am happy to continue to supply parts for these turntables, and if requested I can explain how to modify the arm and suspension to be usable with a better cartridge. Later version AR ES-1 turntables are superior turntables and the arm is excellent and not to be changed out! Only a correct cartridge type should be installed.
