Cleaning Controls and Switches

2015-09-12 (Repair)

A little bit of advice on old analogue equipment: controls like knobs and switches are mechanical devices in themselves and so require some specific care. These parts operate on metal (usually carbon) runners which can wear and corrode. Whenever working on a machine, we thoroughly clean and lubricate the controls, often 2 to 3 times over until clean. They can be difficult to successfully clean on some old equipment such as tube designs or even more recent machines that come from a smoky or moist environment (even proximity to major highways where there is a higher concentration of sulfur oxide and carbon oxides). These conditions can be more corrosive or staining to metal switch parts, making cleaning difficult but absolutely crucial. After returning a serviced unit to a customer, the cleaners remain active for about 2 weeks, so we recommend the controls be exercised occasionally to work in the cleaner. In general it is a good rule of thumb to exercise these controls at least once every 2 or 3 months just to keep the contact buffed. ...Read Full Article

JVC RX450 (concerning repair)

2015-06-11 (Repair)

These units can be fixed, but I only sell low use good condition machines. They usually just require a minor repair and I also update and improve the power supply. An average repair with return shipping (new relay, board connector resoldering, power supply update) is about the same as my refurbished JVC. ...Read Full Article

MXR Pitch Transposer

2015-06-12 (Repair)

Unfortunately, we at this time we do not have an MXR Pitch Transposer. It is now very scarce. Actually I sold my own units here. I still can service these. I liked the "industrial" low bit rate (gritty) digital transposer sound. ...Read Full Article

Pioneer CTF-1250 and CFT-950 Cassette Tape Decks

2018-12-07 (Repair)

We have been supplying a substitute same motor it's just branded as Matsushita, who were the original maker (supplied with the pioneer name on it). Send a picture including the operating voltage and the direction of the main motor. (probably counter clock wise) The Motor for the inter idler drive will fit same but may run in FF or Rewind slightly faster or slower, but the deck will operate correctly. We have done this before but sold thru the available motors. A technician will be required to remove the existing pulleys and mount back onto the new motor shaft. This is done by use of hot solder iron on the...Read Full Article

Reconing and Refoaming Woofer Surrounds

2015-09-12 (Repair)

We get a lot of calls about this matter. More and more music lovers are realizing that many older design woofers are still very competitive performing with modern parts and so it's worthwhile to replace woofer surrounds. Personally, I've seen older Advent, HH Scott, some Infinity, the better original KLH, and especially a wide range of AR woofers that can perform better than some esoteric parts. Magnet, voice coil, and cone technology has made some great strides in improvement today, but most consumer-grade chain marketing speakers are certainly inferior to the great designs of the 60's to the 80's....Read Full Article

Reel to Reels

2006-01-01 (Repair)

We specialize in this type of product. However, we will be limited as to what types of manufacturers we will service. I prefer to do TEAC, Pioneer, Revox, some Sony, Otari, and AKAI. I prefer not to service Tandberg, Uher, and many European brands as they are usually very troublesome and parts are scarce. It is better to call Vince directly but in general we charge $66 per hour for Reel to Reel service and the basic complete cleaning/ lubrication and calibration can easily be $100-$200 plus cost of parts, if the machine is in reasonable condition....Read Full Article

Restoration of Model 21 and Other Solid State Vintage Radios

2015-09-03 (Repair)

Dear AudioProz, I have a Model 21 that is very temperamental; sometimes it works fine and other times the sound just stops. Playing with the on off switch a few times gets it going for 5 or 10 minutes and then the problem repeats itself. I spent $40 a few years ago for a shop in Northboro to tell me that they could not repair it since they did not have the service manual. This radio is not worth a lot, but it sounds great when working. Do you repair these or is it simply not worth fixing?...Read Full Article

Tape for Reel to Reel Decks

2015-05-11 (Repair)

We just recently acquired approximately 60 reels of Maxell Sound Recording Tape 35-180. 30 new and 30 used. The used tape was only recorded on once for classical music, and we ran it all and low speed erased it and tested. Maxell is one of the few tapes which can last 20-30 years, (possibly more if stored correctly in a cool dry place). This tape was purchased recently before Maxell stopped issuing tape to the U.S. It's been tested for shedding and wrap, it's perfect. Maxell type bias and signal levels is similar enough to GP9 (the improved Scotch 996) and soon ATR may release tape (may be within a year) but tape prices will be significantly higher than the prices here....Read Full Article
