Concerning Audibility Of Typical Home Audio Electronics

2015-09-24 (Ask_Vince)

Q) First: I like your web site and I like that it is important to you that you express yourself. When running my own video production biz, once upon a time, I had many of the same feelings about quality and customer relations, etc.. I wish I was the guy who could work with you. I recently puchased a used Odyssey Khatago ampifier. Got a very nice deal. This replaced an Adcom 535. My current Speakers are old (re-edged) Boston Acoustics A-100 series II, and my preamp is a Carver c-1. I am a vinyl fan. With the new amp I hear a wonderful new clarity and presence in my CDs, but I do not consistently hear quite the improvement from the records. So I am questioning the Carver's phono stage. Could the C-1 be the issue?...Read Full Article

Concerning EV Interface A Speakers

2015-02-09 (Ask_Vince)

Q) Hi some time back I purchased a pair of Electro-Voice Interface A speakers on E-bay less the equalizer. I hooked them up and they sounded fine but I seem to remember them having more bass response (I am basing this on how I remember them sounding 30 or so years ago). I finally saw another one on E-bay again last week or so but lost the bid, I have two questions: first, do you feel this unit is required for the speakers to perform correctly (it seems like it but I would like another opinion)...Read Full Article

Concerning Modern Semi Pro Speaker Monitors

2017-07-27 (Educational)

I'll try to make it quick (haha). The simple fact is almost all of these new supposed monitor speakers are Chinese pre-designed platform products with different cosmetics for different markets and price points. I see the same product at $300, $600, or $900 & they all suffer from the same issues: false bass tuning (humpy, bumpy, boxy, etc.) and incorrect and simple crossovers into tweeters to make them sound zippy, forward, present or outright strident. That's what kids like and that's why they make them. Genelec (I am not promoting, simply commenting that there are a few others that are considered fairly neutral) strives to get it much better and then people complain they are too "flat" (read normal reasonable accuracy). The great irony is that a few simple tricks can be done to fix the most obvious sonic problem in speakers but nothing as accurate as I would do in my shop. Here in the shop I use special, very sticky felt strips applied to the cone to lower woofer resonance and stop plastic cones from "squawking"...Read Full Article

Concerning Scott and Vintage Receiver Repairs

2015-10-08 (Ask_Vince)

Q) I recently bought a vintage Scott 388-B receiver that plays very well except for the FM I can't get the multiplex board to light the stereo light. The voltages seem ok at the test points on the board. Can you help? Thanks.

A) The unit needs a real, complete service. Unfortunately, units of this age will require many capacitors throughout the unit to be replaced, this is a certainty, and with a proper tuner alignment may solve the problem....Read Full Article

2012-10-03 (Update)

Concerning Tubes and Tube Amplifiers

2017-06-14 (Educational)

To be honest, although I play guitar, many guitars and many variations of pickups and strings which make big differences no doubt, a bigger issue is that all these fancy amps really share very common similar designs (ie the tube circuits actually are more similar than truly unique to each design). Really what is different (what you hear is different) are simple different equalization (like having a little 7 band equalizer pedal to change tonal balance of the guitar) built into the secondary tube stage. The tubes add very little character. Infact the tubes run at high voltage to maximize signal gain, without distorting. Really....Read Full Article

Condition Descriptions and Photo Requests

2012-10-01 (Update)

The service and repair of our customers' equipment is our most important labor, therefore we are not able to fulfill every photo request we receive (nor would a photo qualify what's vital here, the internal components!). AudioPro has been in this business for better than thirty years, we have a tremendous reputation, and we take great care to accurately describe the mechanical and cosmetic condition of all items. We rate equipment on a scale from one to ten. #10 items are new stock in original box. (Anything we ship has been opened and tested.) #9 units, regardless of age, look and work as good as new, technically qualified with very low use time (perfect face plate, no overheated power supply or damaged connectors). #8 units are in very good condition, serviced and guaranteed working correctly, but do show minor signs of use such as rack wear or very light scratches on a cover, edge, or knob. #7 condition items are working correctly but show obvious signs of use and wear as described. Often such items have faded lettering or minor stains, and connectors may be lightly oxidized. For example, tube electronics seldom get better than #7 or #8 rating. Items rated #6 condition or lower may be incomplete or have operational problems and typically do not appear on our website. We have a large inventory of "junk" #6 and lower machines that we save to break down for parts, so please feel welcome to contact us for any specific parts you need.

Our policy is to search out only top quality condition machines, so most of our equipment truly is #9 condition. We aren't Ebay or Craigslist, and we don't find good equipment there! ...Read Full Article

DBX DX5 CD Player

2015-10-21 (Ask_Vince)

Q) Hello, I too have one of these DBX DX5's. I love it but did not know it had so much value. I see a lot of recording studios seem to have these. Why are they considered to be so valuable?

A) I try to answer all questions. Obviously our website info makes it clear I am a no nonsense kinda guy (to the best of my abilities) but have a passion for music, sound and what and how it is created and transmitted....Read Full Article

DBX Expanders (single vs double rack space 3bx) and modifications

2015-08-11 (Ask_Vince)

Q) What is different about the dbx 3bx pro... is it the ds series?

A) DBX expanders are all conceptually the same. User controlled capability of creating more dynamics and lessening the noise floor (of vinyl and tape) by "expanding" the music's dynamic range, leaving the noise floor further down in level. Old 3bx, big knobs and LED's in 2 rack space box, are discreet circuit 3 bands of VCA ...Read Full Article

DBX Sub Harmonic Synthesizer vs DEQ-2496

2015-09-08 (Educational)

The DBX Sub Harmonic Synthesizer was truly an amazing unit, though they are getting hard to find. I owned one years ago, then used an 'expounder'. Did 4 bands of dynamic EQ as well. Clever auto filter effect and 4 bands of parametric EQ. Now I use a Behringer DEQ-2496 multiband adjustable dynamic EQ, compressor or expander and 5 band digital parametric and 11 band EQ, and real time high sensitivity spectrum analyzer and digital converters the quality of Apogee and image, latency correction and… $300!! I still like analog EQ's, but this Behringer is so accurate, dead quiet, can do tricks like a finalizer, etc. It's hard to look back. No doubt older EQ's have a sound character...Read Full Article
