Behringer Ultrabass EX1000 mod

For this particular mod, I install a two position switch to these machines to give more control over the bass transient harmonic synthesis. The unit performs as designed when the switch is not engaged. In the first position, more dampening is engaged to limit the amount of bass decay. In the second position, the switch further limits bass “ringing” created in the well-designed sub-harmonic generator circuit, creating tighter and punchier bass transients. Essentially, only the initial impulse of bass is enhanced, allowing a thick and plucky quality with less muddiness.

A second switch I install affects a different bass equalization when the limiter kicks in, again helping to tighten up the sound and thicken the bass transients. This is especially useful for modern music and for fast bass players.

When used in a stereo mix or home hi-fi system, my modification makes the sub bass enhancement much more nuanced so that it hides more effectively and naturally in the program material. The unit operates as normal when the switches are not engaged, creating a big, obvious bass enhancement. The modified EX1000 now has a much more flexible functionality.
